What is boudoir photography?
“Boudoir” is a French term for a woman’s private room or bedroom, and boudoir photography goes along with that concept - it is an intimate portrait photography session meant to feature and celebrate yourself in a space entirely your own.
I thought that boudoir was full glam hair and makeup, lingerie, etc. in a studio setting. Does this count as boudoir?
It sure does! Like any photography genre, there are lots of different styles and niches. Just because we aren’t in an actual bedroom set doesn’t mean we aren’t doing a boudoir shoot! Some folks seek out a boudoir experience that involves professional hair and makeup, studio lighting, with various lingerie as outfit options, etc. and that’s awesome! That style of boudoir is beautiful and empowering, too. The most important thing for a client to do is choose a type of boudoir (and photographer) that resonates with them the most, in a space where they will feel the most comfortable.
Do you ever do sessions indoors or in a studio?
Currently Mama Nature is my studio. I exclusively shoot outdoors in all seasons! IPB sessions are built around rediscovering yourself in the beauty of nature, just as you are. The Pre-Shoot Questionnaire includes several questions that allow me to learn about each client’s comfort levels in a variety of outdoor settings, and during our consultation we plan and discuss a shooting location that is right for them!
I have a variety of location options we can choose from depending on the type of environment you want to be captured in, all within 60 miles round-trip from Richmond, Virginia. If you have a location in mind that is beyond the distance included in the session price, let’s chat about it! We will figure out pricing, logistics, and all the details to carry out your vision.
Where do the sessions take place? Do you ever travel?
These photography sessions are meant to capture you at your most confident and comfortable self - and that will look different for each client! Whether you want to wear favorite blue jeans, lingerie, an old flannel shirt, or nothing at all - it’s totally up to you. Same goes for hair and makeup - go with whatever makes you feel your best!
What do I wear to my photoshoot? How should I do my hair and/or makeup?
Absolutely not! Your session will be designed specifically for YOU, and that includes what you choose to wear (or not wear) and how you want to express yourself. During each photoshoot there is time to change to a different outfit and/or disrobe (or re-robe) whenever you’d like.
Do I have to be naked for my session?
Nope - not unless you would like them to be! At the end of each art reveal and selection, there is an opportunity for you to sign a model release that gives IPB permission to share your art online, but that is never a requirement. I only share images online that my clients have given me permission to post publicly.
Will my images be posted online?
IPB is photoshop-free. That being said, I am a firm believer that there is no right or wrong way to celebrate yourself and embrace your body. My goal is to create a space for you to strip down (literally and figuratively), and reconnect with all that you are. Every detail in a photograph is a worthy one that tells your story, and at IPB, none of those details are erased, replaced, exaggerated, or fabricated. Post-processing lightroom work is done with care, but no other image alterations are made beyond that. Your body that we celebrate in the art we create together is the same one you’ll take home with you. I want you to recognize all of those precious details the next time you look in the mirror, but with a deeper love and appreciation for them than you had before.
Do you use photoshop?
First and foremost, remind yourself that this anxiety is completely normal and valid. Most of us have never set foot in front of a camera in such a vulnerable way. Boudoir is very personal. It’s all new and your mind and body are on alert trying to keep you safe from a thing that feels big and scary! After accepting and honoring this anxiety - breathe. Remind yourself that EVERYONE feels nervous before a boudoir shoot. Identify your “why” for doing the session and take your time connecting to that. Let your “why” be your anchor as you navigate these butterflies. Remind yourself that these feelings are temporary, and that I am here to support you through them - from the pre-shoot consultation, to the shoot itself, to the art reveal - we are in this together! Your IPB experience is designed specifically for you, and if there is anything at all that would make you feel more secure, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask!
I love the idea of a boudoir session, but I’m feeling nervous - any advice?
Believe it or not, I have heard this from every single one of my clients (you know, all of those beautiful humans you’ve seen on this site and IPB socials?). It is not your job to “be photogenic” or know how to pose - that’s where I come in! I will guide you through a variety of poses, and also will capture those candid, in-between moments, too. All you need to do is show up as your true self, settle into the nature around you, and I take care of the rest!
I don’t know how to pose and I’m not photogenic - how will I know what to do?
Every client’s needs are going to be different for their shoot, so let’s start with what I will bring (so you don’t have to): camera equipment, towels, first aid kit, some fabrics to pose with if desired, insect repellent, hiking poles if desired. Now, some ideas for what YOU should bring: outfit options you’d like to try (as well as a comfy one to change into for your drive home in case you get dirty or wet during the shoot), plenty of water to stay hydrated, sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat, any makeup you’re planning on wearing for a quick touch-up (e.g. lipstick or eyeliner), and sturdy shoes to walk in (if your shoot involves a water feature, sturdy shoes that can also get wet - no flip flops!), and layers you may want to have on hand (e.g. a robe for quick coverage, or a sweatshirt or coat to put on between shots if we’re shooting in cold weather). Don’t worry, we will flush out all of these details during our pre-shoot consultation! These are just some ideas to get you started.
What should I bring to my photoshoot?
I understand that some folks might want a friend or partner to come along for emotional support during the photoshoot or art reveal. However, at this time IPB does not allow companions to join in these events unless they are present to accommodate an accessibility need.
Can I bring a companion with me to my shoot?
This depends on your desired payment plan and the time of year you would like your session to take place in! Because of the amount of planning and preparation that goes into each session, all sessions must be booked at least two weeks prior to the desired session date.
How far in advance should I book my session?
Photography can be incredibly vulnerable, and there are many ways that unintentional exclusion and harm can be done to clients. As an inclusive photographer, I strive to create a experience that is safe and empowering for every body. As a cisgender, non-disabled, thin-bodied white woman, my lived experience has come with a lot of privilege. That is why I was determined to grow my photography and business knowledge from a diverse group of educators and topics - in the field of photography and beyond. From the pre-shoot consultation and questionnaire where I learn about your unique identity and needs, to the shooting plan and location, to the editing software I use designed for more melanated skin tones, my goal is to not just accommodate, but celebrate, every client.
What does it mean to be an inclusive photographer?
I specialize in providing boudoir experiences to individuals, and do not photograph couples at this time.
